Hamtaro and the Ham-Hams are having lunch in the Clubhouse, but catch Boss sneaking out. The other Ham-Hams decide to follow him - after finishing their meals - to which they find an old man, playing calming music on an ocarina. Boss was sleeping next to him, reclining in a hollowed-out tree stump. When the Ham-Hams spot Boss, he admits that he snuck out to take a nap next to the old man - and the other Ham-Hams quickly decide to join him.
However, their nap is quickly interrupted by a fierce hawk swooping down to the tree stump. All of the Ham-Hams hide in fear; but Boss stays put, and tells everyone that it's perfectly fine. The hawk, now revealed to be named "Tobisuke", is friendly, and also comes to listen to the old man's melody. The old man then pulls out a giant canvas, and resumes work on a painting of Tobisuke. The man takes a liking to Tobisuke in particular, and Tobisuke seems to understand his feelings.
Excitedly, Penelope decides she wants to model for the painting too. She runs up to the tree branch where Tobisuke is sitting, jumping onto his head; but she slides down to the tip of his beak. Upon seeing the nervous Penelope, Tobisuke flew off of the tree, and dropped her off at a playground; while appearing to be dizzy, she proclaims that it was "fun". Upon seeing Tobisuke fly off, the old painter leaves for the day.
The next day at school, Kana tells Laura how she saw the old painter near the park, and the two decide to visit him. All of the Ham-Hams have arrived too - bringing a picnic lunch with them, and greeting Tobisuke. Laura and Kana arrive, looking at the painter bashfully; he notices them and calls them over, showing them his canvas and sketchbook. Laura and Kana are amazed at his artwork, and they agree to meet the old man in the park the following day.
When the old man meets with Laura and Kana the next day, however, Tobisuke had not returned. The three waited for a long time in hopes that he would fly in, but he never did. The old man decides to return home; but he falls to the ground, dropping his easel in the process. Laura and Kana were very concerned - though he claimed that he just "felt a little weak". As he walks off, Laura and Kana notice that he dropped his sketchbook; they decide to follow him, to both give back the book and make sure he's doing well.
Laura and Kana arrive at the old man's apartment and return the sketchbook; meanwhile, the Ham-Hams meet up with Sabu. They ask Sabu if he knows anything about Tobisuke; to which he calls for Françoise and her flock to help. The birds fly the Ham-Hams to where Tobisuke was residing. The Ham-Hams try to explain to Tobisuke that the old man misses him, but he doesn't seem to understand. Eventually, Bijou comes up with a final plan - the Ham-Hams all sing the song that the old man played on his ocarina. Tobisuke understands this, and flies directly in front of the old man's window. He returns to the branch, now with another hawk - which the old man realizes must be his bride, and the reason why Tobisuke had gone away for a while.
At the end of the day, the old man decides to journey to a new place to paint. He presents Laura and Kana with a gift - the now-completed canvas of Tobisuke. The girls initially feel that they couldn't accept his prized painting; but he tells them that seeing Tobisuke with his own eyes is what was truly special to him. Kana then notices a strange yellow piece of the painting, overtop Tobisuke's head; Penelope begins shouting and posing with pride, realizing that she made it into the painting.
